Beschreibung

Cognitive linguistics is a branch of linguistics which was developed from the 1970s onwards and which firmly believes in an interdisciplinary approach to linguistic study. It is strongly related to cognitive science, as it makes use of both evidence and methods from fields such as psychology or neurology. Thus, it does not focus on a specific linguistic theory, but represents a collection of different theories all sharing the idea that language is embedded within (human) cognition.
In the course, we will focus on different theories and concepts situated within cognitive linguistics which will draw upon (and sometimes challenge) basic ideas taught in the introductory course. Therefore, students are expected to have a basic understanding of concepts and terms from morphology, syntax and semantics.
Students are required to read and prepare texts on a weekly basis to actively participate in the seminar.

Textbook:
Evans, V. & Green, M. (2006). Cognitive Linguistics. An Introduction.

This seminar is designed for 4LP students only. Students who need to complete 2LP for the V2 module may register for Prof. Bergs's „Language Variation and Change" lecture. Only under certain circumstances, such as a particular interest in the topic or a provable scheduling conflict, you may approach me about completing this class for 2LP.
